coin was first issued in 1989 in honor of the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Originally issued with a face value of 2,000 schillings, the face value was changed to 100 euros in 2002 with the transition to the euro. Currently, in addition to the 1 oz gold coin, the series also includes various sizes of split coins, silver coins, and platinum coins. To mark the series' 20th anniversary, the Austrian Mint issued a special 20 oz Vienna Gold coin with a purity of .9999.
