The 2026 Calendar Medal depicts the Roman god Mercury, wearing a winged helmet and deep in thought. In his right hand he holds a purse and in his left hand a caduceus (a winged staff with two serpents coiled around it). The caduceus transformed everything it touched into gold and fertility, symbolizing peaceful and lawful trade. The reverse of the 2026 Calendar Medal features all the Sundays and holidays for the year.
Astrologically, Mercury is the ruling planet for 2026 and is associated with Gemini and Virgo. Gemini is depicted behind Mercury, and Virgo and Gemini are depicted in the lower left corner of the medal. The opposite side depicts the constellation Virgo, surrounded by concentric circles with the dates of all Sundays and holidays in 2026.
Mercury, identified with Hermes in Greek mythology, was the god of dreams.
As a child, Mercury escaped from his cradle and stole Apollo's cattle. To avoid detection, he put on his sandals backwards. Apollo, aware of the boy god's cunning, complained to Mercury's mother, but she pointed to the cradle where Mercury lay. As a messenger of Jupiter, Mercury guided the souls of the dead to the underworld. He also accompanied heroes on perilous journeys and was the god of orators, travelers, merchants, and thieves. In Rome, the cult of Mercury as the patron god of the grain trade began in 495 BC, and members of merchant guilds were called "Mercurii." Through Roman trade, the cult of mercury spread far and wide to the west and north, where alchemists began using the term "quicksilver" to refer to volatile substances such as alcohol and quicksilver (known today as quicksilver).
