The scales of the Japanese carp shimmer as preciously as coins. As it is able to travel long distances upstream, the koi is recognised as having qualities such as strength, endurance and determination – qualities you can pass on to those you give this lucky charm.
The Koi Carp
The Nishikigoi, or brocade carp in Japanese, is a special breed of Cyprinus carpio that is also known as the koi for short. Possibly originating in Iran, around 2,000 years ago, the single-coloured carp was introduced into East Asia where the fish were kept as insectivores and for the table. From around 1870, koi began to be regarded as status symbols by Japanese aristocrats. The larger and more magnificent a koi, the wealthier its owner was considered to be. Living up to 60 years, reaching a weight of up to 24 kilograms and a body length of up to 1 metre, the koi symbolised success.
The following inscription appears on the back of the Lucky Token: “Small and round I may be yet every hour I bring luck to thee”.
