This exquisite silver coin, issued by the Austrian Mint in 2008, is a part of its highly regarded "Great Abbeys of Austria" series. This coin celebrates Seckau Abbey (Abtei Seckau), a significant Benedictine monastery located in Styria, Austria, renowned for its Romanesque basilica and long history. The "PP" designation confirms that this coin is struck in the highest Proof quality, which means it features a brilliant, mirror-like field and sharply frosted, highly detailed design elements. Obverse: Designed by Herbert Wähner, the obverse of the coin provides a panoramic view of Seckau Abbey from the exterior. It highlights the Romanesque basilica with its distinctive twin towers and the surrounding Baroque monastic buildings. The inscription "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" (Republic of Austria), the year "2008," and the face value "10 EURO" are also present.
Reverse: Designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, the reverse side offers an interior view of the Seckau Abbey church. It focuses on the impressive high altar and the magnificent medieval crucifixion group (also known as the Seckau Crucifix) suspended above it by four massive chains. This intricate design captures the spiritual and architectural grandeur of the abbey's interior. The inscription "ABTEI SECKAU" (Seckau Abbey) completes the design.
