To celebrate the forthcoming reopening of the Austrian Parliament building, the Austrian Mint is issuing a 5 euro coin called Democracy.

Designed by Theophil Hansen and originally opened in 1883, the neoclassical jewel on Vienna’s elegant and imposing Ringstrasse boulevard has now been renovated, making the building fit for purpose as a modern, citizen-oriented, working parliament. A strong democracy thrives on discourse. Our opinions may differ, but our consensus is democracy. Likewise, fundamental rights and freedoms make a democracy what it is. They enable individual and social freedom and guarantee the co-determination of the individual.
