Seventy years ago, in 1955, the automotive industry witnessed a revolution with the introduction of the DS. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show, the DS was more than just a new car; it was a revolutionary vehicle unlike anything that had come before. Its advanced design and groundbreaking technology redefined the automotive industry and redefined public perception.
What made the DS so revolutionary was, first and foremost, its bold, futuristic silhouette, conceived by renowned Italian designer Flaminio Bertoni, its slim lines, and meticulous aerodynamic design. The DS revolutionized the angular shapes of postwar automobiles, embodying a sleek elegance that remains a source of inspiration to this day.
It captivated not only with its groundbreaking design, but also with its cutting-edge technology. One such innovation was the hydropneumatic suspension, which allowed the car to "float" over the road, smoothly absorbing uneven surfaces. This suspension, combined with power steering and hydraulically controlled brakes, provided a comfortable and safe driving experience. Another major innovation was the curve-following headlights. All of this made the DS a true pioneer of modern automobiles, combining beauty, technology, and ergonomics. An
icon of the 1950s and 1960s, it has left its mark on history and remains a benchmark for innovation to this day. From official use by the French president to numerous film appearances, the DS has achieved legendary status. To
commemorate its 70th anniversary, the Paris Monnaie designed a coin collection celebrating the bold aesthetics and technical excellence of the DS. This series highlights the profound influence DS has had on the evolution of the automobile.
The obverse of the coin features two iconic DS models. The top features the DS 23, launched in 1975. The DS 23 featured a distinctive, avant-garde front end and was the last production model. Its rotating headlights, a first in automotive history, are highlighted by selective gold deposition. They appear to illuminate the night sky as they move with the road. The bottom depicts the DS 19, the first model produced since 1955. This model features headlights positioned below streamlined windows and a more modern radiator grille. These two versions symbolize the evolution of DS style. The
DS 23's headlights are accented with a carefully selected gold color. A carefully selected black rhodium coating accentuates the headlights' illumination against the night sky. The
reverse depicts the rear of the vehicle, with a magnified view of the rear indicator lights above the rear window. The red color accentuates this detail.
