In 2020, Monnaie de Paris launched the series the “History of American Independence” series the arrival of La Fayette in Boston. Washington Before Boston followed in 2021, the Great Seal of the USA in 2022, Libertas Americana medal in 2023, the Battle of Cowpens in 2024, and Benjamin Franklin and the Winged Genius in 2025.

This year, Monnaie de Paris presents a reinterpretation of the Libertas Americana medal to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The figures on this historic medal are depicted after years of shared history, exchange and growth.

250 years later, the two figures stand proudly side by side. Minerva, representing France, wears the same shield with three fleurs-de-lis, helmet and breastplate as on the original medal. Lady Liberty, representing the United States, holds the tablet from the Statue of Liberty, on which is written the date of American independence in Roman numerals: JULY IV MDCCLXXVI. Together, they hold the flame of liberty and look serenely towards the future. The leopard is no longer part of the scene, as the British threat is no longer part of the story.

The illustration is surrounded by the phrase ‘LIBERTAS POPULUSQUE UNIVERSALIS’, which means ‘FREEDOM AND UNIVERSAL PEOPLE’. The date 4 July 2026 is inscribed below the figures, date of the independence of the United States.

The reverse of this collection is identical to that of the LIBERTAS AMERICANA collection from 2023.
