Since 1935, DC, part of Warner Bros. Discovery, has been creating iconic characters and enduring stories, and is one of the world's leading publishers of comics and graphic novels. DC's creative work entertains audiences of all generations around the world with DC stories and characters.
In 2025, to mark the 90th anniversary of DC Comics, Monnaie de Paris paid tribute to the iconic characters of the DC Comics universe. From Batman, the Dark Knight, to Superman, the Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, the Amazonian warrior, all of whom were featured on the coins.
In 2026, Monnaie de Paris continues to honour one of the iconic superheroes of the DC Comics universe: Batman!
In 1939, Batman made his debut in the DC Comics universe. Darker and more mysterious, this masked vigilante from Gotham City – lacking superpowers but armed with extraordinary intelligence – offered a contrasting vision of the hero.
As a child, Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents being brutally murdered in Gotham City’s Crime Alley. Traumatised by their death, he dedicated his life to becoming the world’s greatest weapon against crime: Batman! To become the ultimate vigilante, the Dark Knight trained his body and mind to achieve the pinnacle of mental and physical superiority. He is a master detective and a martial arts expert, but his greatest weapon is his mind. Batman has a plan for every occasion, as well as high-tech weapons, gadgets and vehicles to aid him in his relentless pursuit of justice.
On the obverse, Batman is depicted overlooking Gotham City, accompanied by bats. When the coin is kept in the dark, the moon shines after being exposed a light source.
On the reverse, the face value is surrounded by two branches – one of oak and the other of laurel – which evoke the Euro symbol. The entire design on the reverse is framed by the words ‘République Française’ and a pattern of lines representing the hexagon.
