Jacques Delors (1925-2023) was a French politician and economist, known for his major role in European integration. He was President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1995.

Over his career, Jacques Delors engaged in a number of battles. Here are the highlights of his career:

  • Creation of the single European market without borders: As President of the European Commission (1985-1995), Jacques Delors was a key player in the creation of the single market, allowing the free movement of people, goods, services and capital within the European Community.
  • Introduction of the euro: Jacques Delors headed the Delors Committee, which proposed economic and monetary union, leading to the creation of the euro. The Maastricht Treaty in 1992 was a crucial step in this process.
  • Education and training: Jacques Delors has always had a keen interest in education. He initiated a law in France in 1971 obliging companies to devote part of their profits to continuing professional training. He also chaired a UNESCO commission on education for the 21st century.
  • Social Dialogue: Jacques Delors played a crucial role in promoting social dialogue at European level, encouraging cooperation between employers, trade unions and governments to improve working conditions and workers' rights.
  • ERASMUS , the free movement of ideas: Jacques Delors supported and promoted the idea of an exchange programme for European students. Launched in 1987, the ERASMUS programme has enabled millions of students to benefit from an educational experience abroad, promoting mobility and cooperation between European universities. The Erasmus programme has become one of the most emblematic symbols of European integration, helping to shape a generation of more open and connected European citizens.

Jacques Delors died in Paris on December, 27th 2023 at the age of 98. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth, Monnaie de Paris paid tribute to him.
