This 2 Euro commemorative coin, issued by Slovenia in 2015, is part of a special joint coinage program by all Eurozone member states to mark the 30th anniversary of the European Flag. Adopted by the European Community (now the European Union) in 1985, the flag with its twelve golden stars on a blue background has become a powerful symbol of unity, solidarity, and identity among the peoples of Europe.
The common design for this commemorative coin was chosen through a public online competition organized by the European Commission, with the winning design created by Georgios Stamatopoulos of the Bank of Greece. The central motif of the coin features a stylized depiction of the European Flag, where the twelve stars are transformed into human figures in a circular embrace, symbolizing the birth of a new Europe and the harmonious collaboration among its nations.
Above the central design, the inscription "SLOVENIJA" (Slovenia) is placed, along with the years "1985-2015" commemorating the anniversary. The initials of the designer, "ΓΣ", are subtly incorporated into the design. The outer ring of the coin universally displays the twelve stars of the European Union.
Minted in Uncirculated (UNC) quality, these coins were produced for general circulation, making them a widely accessible and significant numismatic item for collectors and a tangible representation of Slovenia's shared European identity. The standard bi-metallic composition, consisting of a copper-nickel outer ring and a nickel-brass plated nickel inner core, ensures its place within the regular Euro coinage.
