• Joint issuance of all euro countries in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Flag of Europe.
• The blue flag with golden stars is the symbol of unity and solidarity within Europe.
• The design of the coin came about through a competition. A jury made a first selection of five designs from 62 entries. EU residents chose the final version from these designs.
• The winning design was made by Georgios Stamatopoulos of the Bank of Greece.
