This stunning silver proof coin celebrates Matariki, the Māori New Year, which marks the rising of the Matariki star cluster in mid-winter. The reverse of the coin illustrates the Matariki origin story, where Tāwhirimātea, the god of wind and storms, is said to have torn out his eyes in anger and cast them into the heavens, forming the Matariki stars. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the year 2022 and silver purity details.
