New Zealand's proximity to Antarctica occasionally brings the Southern Hemisphere's aurora borealis (known locally as "aurora borealis") into the night sky. While the aurora can be seen throughout New Zealand, it is most beautiful near the southern horizon of the South Island, especially during the dark hours of winter. By avoiding the bright lights of residential areas and minimizing moonlight, aurora hunters can observe the spectacular aurora borealis with little to no equipment. This coin features a vivid image of the aurora borealis photographed in the South Island.
In addition to the two silver coins, this set also includes a proof version of New Zealand's circulation currency. Each coin is specially engraved with the date 2024 and is the first to feature the portrait of King Charles III. The coins feature many iconic New Zealand symbols, including a carved Maori mask known as a "Koruru" on the 10-cent coin and Captain James Cook's ship, the HMS Endeavour, on the 50-cent coin. Please note that
fingerprints may cause the silver coins to discolor, so we recommend wearing gloves when handling them.
