The clacking of the pendulum inside the tower
really reflects the relaxed attitude of the city of Bern.
Patrick Bohnenblust
The history of the Zytglogge tower dates back to the Middle Ages. Its astronomical
clock, whose mechanism was created in 1530, set the rhythm of Bern
for centuries and remains one of the city’s most recognizable symbols to this day.
Moving figures, precision craftsmanship, and the distinctive character of this
structure have given Zytglogge a special place in the history of European clockmaking.
Despite numerous renovations, it has preserved its unique character and continues
to draw attention as a symbol of old Bern.
